Why a Regular Check-Up Matters, Even When Nothing’s Wrong

Most people come to see us when they want something done. A treatment, a specific concern, a moment coming up in the diary. That makes sense. But some of my most valuable appointments aren’t about doing anything at all. They’re check-ups: you come in, we look at where you are now, we talk about what’s changed, and we revisit the plan. No treatment necessarily attached.

I think these appointments are underrated, and I want to explain why. Because faces change, lives change, and a plan made eighteen months ago for the person you were then isn’t automatically the right plan for the person you are now.

Quick answer

A check-up is a periodic appointment where we reassess your face and skin as they are today, talk through anything that’s changed, and review your treatment plan rather than carry out a treatment. It matters because ageing is gradual and continuous, so what you needed a year ago may not serve you now; your life, skin, and priorities shift; and a plan that evolves with you delivers far better, more natural results over time than a series of disconnected one-off treatments. It’s the difference between tending something over years and reacting to it in bursts.

Why faces don’t stay still, and plans shouldn’t either

Ageing isn’t a series of events; it’s a slow, continuous process. Volume shifts, skin quality changes, the way your face moves and settles evolves year on year. None of it happens in dramatic jumps, which is exactly why it’s easy to miss, and why reacting only when something suddenly bothers you tends to lead to bigger, more obvious interventions than you’d have needed with a bit of foresight.

A check-up lets us see the direction of travel. When I look at someone I’ve known for a while, I’m not just assessing today; I’m noticing how things are changing and where they’re heading. That’s what lets us stay ahead of it gently, with small, well-timed, natural adjustments, rather than waiting until something needs a much bigger correction. Good aesthetics is tending, not rescuing.

What’s changed since we last saw you?

This is the heart of a check-up, and it’s rarely only about your face.

Your skin and face. How has your skin behaved since we last met? Has anything shifted, settled, softened, or started to bother you? Has a previous treatment done what we hoped, and held the way we expected? Sometimes the honest finding is that something has worn off and is worth refreshing; sometimes it’s that you’re holding beautifully and need nothing yet.

Your life. This matters more than people expect. A new baby, perimenopause or menopause, a stressful year, weight change, a big event on the horizon, a change in budget or priorities. All of these change what makes sense for you, and a plan should flex around your actual life, not sit frozen from the day it was first drawn up.

Your goals. What you want evolves too. People often start focused on one concern and, over time, care more about overall skin health, or prevention, or simply looking well and rested rather than changing anything. A check-up is where we make sure the plan still matches what you actually want now, not what you wanted when we first met.

Reviewing the plan, honestly

When we sit down and look at the whole picture, the conversation goes in one of a few directions, and I value them all equally.

Sometimes it’s a case of gently adjusting: a small, well-timed treatment to stay ahead of a change, or a tweak to what we’re prioritising. Sometimes it’s about sequencing: deciding what’s worth doing now, what can wait, and what order gives the best, most natural result for your budget. And sometimes, genuinely, it’s about doing less: pausing, spacing things out, or simply maintaining what you have. I would always rather tell you that you don’t need anything than create a reason for a treatment.

A plan built and reviewed this way, as a living thing rather than a one-off prescription, is what produces results that still look like you. Faces treated reactively, concern by concern, often start to look worked on. Faces tended steadily, with regular check-ins and small course corrections, tend to just look well.

This isn’t about selling you more

I want to be clear, because I know how this could sound. A check-up isn’t a way to find things to treat. If it were, it would betray the whole point.

A good check-up is where you get an honest, expert read on where you are, delivered by someone who knows your face and has no interest in talking you into anything. Some of my favourite appointments end with “you’re doing brilliantly, carry on, come back in a year.” That’s not a wasted visit, that’s exactly what a trusted clinical relationship should offer: somewhere to check in, get the truth, and feel looked after, whether or not anything needs doing.

The Ametrine view

I’d love for people to think about aesthetics the way they think about other things they look after properly: as an ongoing relationship with someone who knows them, not a series of transactions. A regular check-up, even when nothing’s wrong, is what makes that possible. It keeps your plan matched to your real life, it keeps your results natural by staying ahead of change, and it means you always have somewhere honest to bring your questions.

If it’s been a while, or your life has shifted, or you simply want an expert pair of eyes on where you’re at, come in for a proper look. Nothing needs to be wrong, and nothing needs to end in treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an aesthetics check-up?

It’s a periodic appointment where your practitioner reassesses your face and skin as they are now, talks through anything that’s changed in your skin, life or goals, and reviews your treatment plan. Unlike a treatment appointment, the point isn’t to do a procedure; it’s to take stock and make sure your plan still fits you.

Why would I book a check-up if nothing is wrong?

Because ageing is gradual and continuous, so staying ahead of it gently gives more natural results than reacting only when something suddenly bothers you. A check-up also keeps your plan matched to your current life and priorities, and often confirms you need nothing at all for a while, which is useful to know.

How often should I have a check-up?

It varies by person, but roughly once a year suits many people, or sooner if your life or skin has changed noticeably, after a baby, around menopause, after weight change, or following a stressful period. Your practitioner can suggest a sensible interval for you.

Will I be pushed into having treatments?

No. A check-up done properly is an honest assessment, not a sales appointment. Sometimes the best outcome is being told to carry on as you are and come back in a year. If a check-up ever feels like pressure to buy, that reflects the clinic, not what a check-up should be.

What happens during the check-up?

We look at how your skin and face are now, discuss how any previous treatments have held and what has changed for you, and then review the plan together, whether that means a small adjustment, resequencing what’s worth doing and when, or simply maintaining what you have. You leave with a clear, honest picture and a plan that fits your actual life.

Is a check-up the same as a consultation?

They overlap, but a check-up is specifically about reviewing an ongoing relationship and plan over time, seeing how things have changed and where they’re heading, rather than assessing you for the first time or for one particular treatment. It’s the appointment that keeps everything joined up year to year.
